7th Annual SABIS® Regional Sports Tournament Held in Cairo, Egypt
Staff, students, and parents of the International School of Choueifat (ISC), Lahore enthusiastically welcomed 53 students and 5 staff members on Monday, April 7, 2008, as they returned from the 7th Annual SABIS® Regional Sports Tournament in Egypt. The traditional Pakistani flower-necklace welcome was followed by warm greetings from the School’s Director and sharing of the trip’s highlights.
All the ISC Lahore teams – boys soccer, boys basketball, girls basketball, swimming, and track and field teams – won their preliminary heats and made it into the finals.
ISC Lahore students bagged two gold medals and one bronze. Kara Koenig Alam, Grade 8 gold medallist, swam to victory in the 25m. Freestyle under 12 and 25m. Backstroke Under 12 events. Saad Junaid Rana, Grade 7 student, won the bronze medal for the 60m. sprint Under 12.
The tournament was hosted by the two ISC schools in Cairo, Egypt. Over 750 students participated from 23 Choueifat schools in Pakistan, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Saudia Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Jordan.
After a colorful march past the tournament was opened by the Director of ISC Cairo and addressed by the well-known Egyptologist, Dr. Zahi Hawwas, Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities. Mr. Victor Saad, Vice President of SABIS® Educational Services also cheered on the participants with an inspiring address. The two-day function attracted many local and international spectators who thoroughly enjoyed the well-organized sporting events, the entertaining atmosphere, and lavish festivities, such as the dance spectacle based on traditional themes from the time of the Pharaohs.
The closing ceremony on April 4 featured the award of individual medals and team trophies. The next day, the ISC Lahore delegation visited the Pyramids, stood in awe on the banks of the River Nile, and visited a traditional market as well as a modern mall before packing for the journey home. Students returned home filled with excitement and ever-lasting memories. ISC Lahore is a member of the SABIS® international network of 50 schools in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe and North America, with an approximate present enrolment of over 40,000 students.
